Copenhagen: design city
Copenhagen topped our quality of life survey for many reasons, not least its seamless urban planning that prioritises mobility and resident happiness. Denmark’s capital is, put simply, a city designed for life.
Expo 15: Happy union
Established in the tradition of Denmark’s folk schools, Lo-skolen was designed by Jarl Heger and Karen & Ebbe Clemmensen. The 1960s modernist design remains, with its white-brick buildings and custom-designed furniture.

Upwardly mobile
Milan's Salone del Mobile showed an optimistic mood despite the credit crunch, attracting a record 348,000 visitors. Many came from abroad, with a strong showing from booming South American countries.

Baselworld watch fair is where manufacturers unveil the new timepieces that often take years to craft. There are no quick sales either; brands eager to retain exclusivity don’t sell to any old oligarch.

Japanese car company Subaru has always attracted a less conformist driver. Its Forester model epitomises the brand’s quirky but unflashy design, solid reliability and diverse following, from Swiss policemen to laid-back farmers.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is Asia’s MIT or Cambridge, determined to be as well-known. Its innovation and robot humanoids prove it worthy of the task.
